Due to circumstances already outlined within the OOC community, we have found ourselves in need of two new moderators. We could definitely use as much help as we could get, so don't be shy even if you feel as though you haven't been around that long; having great ideas and being good at problem solving is often the most helpful thing of all.

Rather than answering a series of set questions, we would just like to hear from you, in your own words, and would like you to tell us what you think would make you a good addition to the moderating team.

What's your schedule like in terms of school, work and other RL obligations: [We'll be honest, this is a part time job. Each mod spends about 15-20 hours a week in maintaining the game. There are things to do daily, such as page updates, daily discussions, event planning.]

We're a big game now with 100 plus characters. How would you make it so events and plots appeal to everyone in the game? Which events do you think are working best with our current player base?

You see some players talking on plurk about a possible event. It's a bit iffy in terms of what is allowed without having to ask permission. How would you go about handling this.

What type of communicator are you? Are you out spoken? Do you sit and observe first? Do you go for the silent agreement approach?

Two players are having a fight oocly where player A's character does something particularly violent that affects a decent portion of the game but isn't exactly expulsion worthy, and player B has to deal with the fallout because of the character's CR. Player B is complaining about this openly to anyone who will listen, and a significant portion of the player base takes issue with Player A actions, until OOC is bleeding into IC excessively. You are the only moderator around when this happens. How do you handle it, how do you treat each of the players involved, and how does it change things if Player B is a good friend of yours?

What ideas would you want to implement if you became a moderator?

How comfortable are you with HMTL? We do a lot of page editing and charts for the comm, we'd like a gauge of your skills.

How would you go about encouraging players to post more frequently?

Thinking of applying as an Original Character or a Canon Original Character? This is the application page to visit. As with other applications, we want to make sure you read the rules, as well as the taken character list if you're applying as a Canon OC to make sure the character you are applying for has not been taken already. You also might want to check out holds just to make sure.

Please make sure that you read over the FAQ and the HP canon guide to clear anything up, and if you feel like something has not been mentioned, post a comment and someone will get back to you as soon as possible. If having difficulty with your application, we recommend you give the Application Guide a look over as well.

Wondering what the guidelines are for Original Characters? Not sure if your character counts as Canon OC or what that even is? In addition to the normal application rules, you're expected to follow the guidelines we have listed below:

O R I G I N A L C H A R A C T E R R U L E S;

Canon OC rules:

1. No Fandom OC's. What is a Fandom OC? A Fandom OC is, for example, an X-Men character you created for that world and you want to bring them here. Not allowed, unfortunately.
2. Has to be a legitimate character. What does this mean? A random passerby character with no lines does not count.
3. In the personality section please make sure to let us know how you came to some of your own choices on the personality. This means naming canon examples.
4. If you're unsure whether your character qualifies as a Canon OC or not, make sure to ASK A MODERATOR before submitting your application.

OC Rules in General:

1. The same rules that we have for regular applications still apply. So check with us first about half Veela, Animagus, Vampire or Werewolf things.
2. Your character is not a descendant or related to ANY canon Harry Potter character. There are no exceptions to this rule.
3. Please be thorough with your personality section. We want a very solid idea of this. Since we don't have another place to look up their correct personality, the last thing we want is a character who is vague enough for this to change at a whim.
4. Applications with sparkly characters who are flawless orphans who are perfect at every subject and can do no wrong and everyone falls in love with them at every moment will be rejected.

- Matt (Death Note)
- Obscure Disney Prince/Characters (i.e: Prince from Cinderella/Snow White or the Feather Duster from Beauty & the Beast)

- Ditzy Doo (My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic)
- Femio (Princess Tutu)
- Silent Protagonists (video games)

T H I N G S T O T A K E N O T E O F;

1. The mods have the jurisdiction to approve or deny any application submitted.

2. Post your application with your personal journal on the application page itself instead of linking it! If you don't have a personal journal, that's okay, but we strongly prefer it for keeping track of people. Remember to PUT THE TYPE OF APPLICATION IN THE HEADER so we know whether this is a OC or a Canon OC.

3. Your application will need to include two specific words; these words can be found hidden in the rules and information pages linked in the community profile.

4. You may only apply for ONE character at a time. Once that character is approved than you may choose another. A player is not allowed more than one un-responded to application on the application forum. For all new players to the RP, we ask you wait one week before applying as a new character, this will give you time to settle in to the community.

5. If the character's canon is ongoing and it's still early in their introduction, rather than applying them as a canon OC, we will advise you to postpone your application until you can get more information on them.

6. KEEP IN MIND. This is Hogwarts, and it's a British school. There shouldn't be a huge flood of "DESU DESU DESU" at any point in time. Thus, your characters should be British, or at the very least European. If they aren't, you MUST have a GOOD reason for it! The UK is very diverse and has many nationalities, so if you want them to be a different ethnicity, they can still be British! Here are some locations where characters reside.

7. When applying for a Hetalia Character, we request that you phrase the Canon history in the context of the comic, as opposed to the actual history of the country. This is so we can see how the history translates in to the anthropomorphic character.

8. PLEASE KEEP OOC CONVERSATION OUT OF THE APP POST! At least keep it to a minimum if you are going to say something such as 'huzzah for [fill in character name here]', get their AIM and tell them in person. I am sure they would rather hear it that way.

9. We don't have App Cycles at this rp. If applying for a:
→ Student: The most important thing to remember for students is that they are students who go to school. Be prepared to observe all student rules, meaning there are IC consequences for fighting, sneaking out after curfew, and pranks. That doesn't mean not to have fun, just know your character can get in trouble for it! There are also classes with homework, but signing up and doing school work is optional. More info on student rules are here and these spots will always be open.

→ Teacher/TA: Keep in mind what characters are suitable to teach, and pick a subject that makes sense for them (and for Hogwarts if it's a non- canon class). There is a maximum of two teachers and two TAs on any given subject and occupied teacher and TA spots can be seen there. Teacher characters should do Homework often, which can be posted here. Teachers are encouraged to give out detentions, house points, and overall, remember that they're teachers. More info on teacher rules are here. Currently: OPEN TO CANON CLASSES

→ Staff Member: Similar to professors, minus the assignments, they have a degree of authority as well, but not as much as teachers. They focus on working in the hospital wing, library, grounds, etc. Just like professors, they shouldn't entirely neglect their jobs for social interaction and will use the same application form as teachers. 10. If your application is:
→Accepted: Congratulations! Follow the instructions, add yourself to all the lists, and welcome to Sorting Hat!

→Wavered: We think your application could use a few improvements to be up to the quality of our roleplay. You have a week to adjust these issues before the character is up for grabs again. If you reapply and we still don't find it up to par, you will be rejected.

→Rejected: There are significant problems with the application, so you must wait one week before reapplying or reserving that character (unless you already have a hold on that character, but you can't renew it if the hold expires). However, if you want to apply a different character, you can do so whenever.

R U L E S
1. Anyone can apply for counselor spots, even players not in the game proper.

2. One counselor character per player.

3. There will be a maximum of 15 counselors. At least five of those must be adults.

4. Counselor characters must be at least 17 (their age can be slightly changed from their canon age).

5. Once accepted, the mods will contact you about duties you'll be expected to perform. If you're going to be horribly busy during July, please don't apply for a counselor spot.

6. All other in game rules apply to these characters as well.

HOW THE HECK DO THESE JOURNALS WORK?

N E W ! M O D A P P L I C A T I O N

You have until: The end of OCTOBER 31ST, 2009 to submit your application.

With the Real Life and the school year being here IC!ly and OOC!ly, the moderators are in need of another mod to help out with things about the community. There is really no sector to hand out for the mod to be in charge of, so as long as you are happy and enjoy being well-rounded, the help will most likely fall in community upkeep and applications. Just another number to add to the list, we would need help with things that don't get taken care of on time due to various schedule changes around the community.

And four is such a clean, even number! You would not be a submod, you would be a mod of course. We're all just mods really, crazy-wacky mods. Everyone can have their say in events though, its not a big deal to help out, the assigned fields just keep things a little more organized.

R U L E S ;
□ Applicants must have a strong understanding of the game play and the way of things. It would be nice if the applicants had some seniority in SH to know how things run and the mannerism of certain people, but if you are new and feel like you are up to it, by all means apply away. Please consider that when applying you consider that not only that you will be making important choices on your own and keep things at the level the game is suppose to be at, but you must work well with others. Even though the fields are split, big events and important choices need to be run by all moderators. All player complaints need to be addressed as a group, as a whole, to keep things clear and healthy. Discussing and argument is part of a relationship, but one needs to know how to handle it respectfully and professionally.

□ The mod will be voted on amongst the current moderators. Applications will be screened to keep drama out of the process.

□ The amount of effort you put into your application is of your own accord. You put into it what you put into it, We are not giving you a 2500 word limit or anything, but your effort will be apparent and will help in the matter in who to choose.

A P P L I C A T I O N G U I D E

Having trouble with your application? Worried whether it'll be accepted or not? Here are some tips that we offer for prospective players to get an idea of what we look for in an app.

→ Read the rules. This is a big thing, you must read the application rules (as well as the community rules) and the HP!Canon to apply. Not following the rules is a good way to get wavered. And subsequently rejected. And we'd REALLY rather not reject people.

→ Word Count. If a section has a word count, writing less than required is another good way to get wavered. We DO check, so doing a few words extra is the safest bet. The word count is so we can see you have a grasp on the character enough to write a decent amount on them.

→ Grammar and Spelling. This should be a given, but an application ridden with grammatical errors does not a happy mod make. We view grammar issues as something that will persist during play and it can be distracting for your fellow players. Given the fact that people tend to have a lot more time to mull over an application than a tag, checking your spelling and grammar is highly recommended.

→ Personality. We like to see ALL aspects of their personality, especially if it undergoes a large upheaval in canon. Even if you plan on picking up a character midway in their development and playing it out in-game, we want to see that you know your character and how they grow or react to different circumstances. This portion is important, because no matter how their history is morphed for Harry Potter canon, their personality should stay the same. Staying IC is important. In the case of Canon OCs, we want to see the specific ways in which you have determined their personality and voice.

→ Hogwarts Houses. Characters are complex, and they rarely fit in just one house. Most people have the personality they reveal to others, and then their true selves (which might be a different person entirely). In this section, we're asking for you to explain how your character might be courageous, loyal, clever, or resourceful, and if they completely don't fit a house, we're asking you to explain why. Part of their suitability also depends on what they personally value the highest, even if they don't necessarily exemplify these traits. We generally don't recommend using this as an opportunity to pimp your character for a certain house or over generalize with 'they aren't pushovers so they can't be Hufflepuff' or 'they don't hate muggles and they aren't evil so they can't be Slytherin'. This section is so that we can get a fuller image of your character and your understanding of them, so we can better pick a house for them. For brief info on the characteristics of each house, read up on them on the FAQ.

→ HP!Canon History. This is the place people often struggle the most. The thing to consider is, if your character was a wizard, how would they be? It's a great chance to get creative, but it's also the place that tends to have the most amount of issues in converting the original canon for the character. When in doubt, consult the FAQ and the links provided on the HP!Canon Guide. Consulting a moderator before applying is also wise if having difficulty.

The best advice for this portion is to use common sense and to write a backstory that will result in your character having the same personality as they do in canon. This is also the portion to put the classes or hobbies your character enjoys.

→ Suitability. This is a section for teacher characters only, and it is not always required. However, if you feel there may be some question as to why Dumbledore would hire your character (for example, if they are a murderous psychopath, if they can't manage basic spells, if they are allergic to children, etc), we would like you to provide a clear explanation as to why they should be hired. If the mods are unsure about your character's suitability, we may ask for elaboration on this section.

→ Sample Journal Entry. This is an entry written by your character on the journal system for others to read. This is a chance to showcase two things: their personality and your handle on the voice of the character. You've described their personality, so this is the place to show it. Showing speech patterns that the character shares is also encouraged. They can post about homework, quidditch, or anything, so long as it displays part of who they are, even if it's only the face they show to their peers.

→ Third Person. The third person sample is at times viewed as difficult, but it doesn't have to be. If you choose to use a third person sample, the best examples are the ones that have the character doing a physical action that shows their personality and how they act. Your character could be doing something mundane, such as studying, walking through the hallway, or practising spells, but if the spell sets someone on fire, is it intentional? Were they having difficulty prior to casting it? Does anyone comment to it, and what is your character's reaction to them?

This is just one example, but it's meant to display that the log doesn't have to be fancy, it just has to be consistent with who they are. Many fail to make the word limit for this one, so being conscientious of your word count is important as well.

→ Original Character Applications. These applications will be viewed by the whole mod team so we can be sure that we have a sense of your character. Important factors here include making sure your character is fully fleshed out, that they have a distinct voice that is unique to them, and that they are flawed, human, characters. The effort that you put in your application and character will be evident to the mod team.

→ When in doubt. Contact a mod before submitting. There is no lack of places to message us and we'll be happy to help. You can also comment to the FAQ or this entry if you have a question you think everyone could benefit from. We have a sample application for those who find themselves struggling, as well.

H O M E W O R K P O S T

Want all your ickle firsties to do their homework? Did you duck your head out for a moment and suddenly your character is swamped in classwork that they have to catch up on? Then this is the place to post what is due! Teachers should post a blank thread, with their class name in the subject. Students will comment to them using the form below when a Professor has issued an assignment. They will then be awarded points based on how well they did, ranging from 1 (Poor) to 15 (Excellent).

Replies will be swept at the end of each month to keep things clean.

C L A S S S I G N U P

This is where teachers can have their class sign ups and where students can sign up for classes. Signing up for classes here is not mandatory to actually be in the class. It's mainly around for those who like to play the extra step.

Important things to know...

1. Teachers are to reply to this post with the class in the SUBJECT LINE. Please post in your teachers journal when you do this.

2. Students reply to the class comment with the proper information.

3. All elective classes need a sign up, no exception. This includes elective classes that are canon to Harry Potter.

4. Don't reply with all your characters with one comment. This is so we can keep the post clean when people drop.

This is where students can organize and sign up for extracurricular clubs! Anyone can run a club, and it can be organized any way that you want! Staging club meetings also gets you House Points; +5 for officers and +1 for all who attend.

Ever thought of an awesome plot? This is the place to inform the mod team about your plot so that it can work out for everyone.

Unlike events which are more school wide and can be suggested at the calendar page, plots only include a small handful of people. Plots tend to be a sequence of events, where as events are one time occurrences.

Serious physical/magical injury, turning into a vampire or a werewolf, any dark wizard plot, actual criminal offenses that can take place in the real world (i.e.: serious harassment, rape, murder and so on) all need to be approved by the mods. Just fill in the text box to submit your idea.
