Canon Background: Kurloz Wiki Kurloz is the Ancestor/Descendant of Gamzee Makara and is the resident Rage player of his group's session in Sgrub. Hailing from Beforus, Kurloz grew up in a peaceful society where the higher caste trolls were meant to use their longevity to care for the lower, short-lived trolls. When he was younger he had both his red quadrants filled, having Mituna as a moirail and a matespritship with Meulin Lejion, and the two were so attached that their friends speculated that the two would be matesprits forever. One day however, they fell asleep together and Kurloz supposedly had a nightmare so terrible that he released the most dreadful sound ever heard, likened to the Vast Honk. The sound deafened Meulin completely and she never recovered her hearing. Anguished at the pain he had caused to his matesprit, Kurloz took a vow of silence, bit out his tongue and sewed his mouth shut. Following this Kurloz and Meulin took up sign-language, able to lengthily communicate with each other again. Though the two remain good friends, they never returned to their matespritship.
Like Gamzee, Kurloz is devoted to his esoteric faith, and even before he went mute he often preached of the "messiahs" and "angels of double death", which unsettled a few of his friends. Unlike Gamzee though, Kurloz's attire and style of makeup imply a more sinister cult than Gamzee's, as Kurloz dresses as a skeleton mime rather than a juggalo or clown.
While it seemed impossible for such a gentle (if occasionally sassy, given him flipping the bird at Meenah) troll to have a dark side, it does exist and in spades. Upon receiving Gamzee's codpiece from Meulin, Kurloz displays that he is a potent telepath and more than just a bit capable of mind-control, using his chucklevoodoos to turn Meulin nto his puppet, then showing a distinct possessive nature when he refers to her as his "kittybitch" of all things. This sinister side to Kurloz grows as it is shown that he is helping his "lord" (supposedly Gamzee's unstable half) to kill off his "heretic" friends and to bring about the Dark Carnival.
Original Background: Paranormal. Kurloz's mother was a bit of a wild child who had been close friends with Rhys Rhydderch's younger sister Rhian. Along the line she ended up meeting the mysterious Rhys and was promptly charmed, leading to a short whirlwind relationship. While she was enamoured with him, she came to realize that Rhys wasn't entirely sane or safe, and left him with no hard feelings. It wasn't until she was back in her hometown that she realized she was pregnant, and recalling how dangerous Rhys was inside, she decided against telling him and settled down, wanting to raise her child away from such insanity.
Kurloz grew up with his single mother in a small house of Doolin where he spent much of his childhood soaking up Irish folktales, enjoying the stories of miraculous happenings by thanks of local faeries. Whether it was thanks to his being of wizarding blood or not, Kurloz was able to see the faeries that would occasionally appear in the forests and beach, which only strengthened his belief in miracles. Perhaps it was thanks to the fickle faeries and their natural emissions of magic, but somewhere along the line they might have been responsible for the development of his capricious nature that seems to be part of the latent insanity in his father's bloodline. He began drawing quite a bit as a child and would often scribble out the various magical creatures he met. These solitary habits of wandering around alone and sketching led him to be alienated by the children in his village, even the young witches and wizards finding him weird.
His mother didn't bothering to teach him about magic until his own powers began to manifest - the most notable incident being when he managed to draw all the rats in the village to their back yard as he practiced on his fiddle. His mother grew worried when he would tell her about the things he'd learned from the fae folk (herding the rats having been one sign of the strength in his 'persuasion' they'd given him), and tried to keep him from playing out at night when the creatures would be more likely to appear. It all amounted to nothing though, since Kurloz would just sneak out of the house. He never knew his father and his mother refused to tell him about the mysterious man, only revealing that he was a wizard and that yes, he was alive. She couldn't completely deny Kurloz after all - he'd clearly inherited a certain amount of Rhys' compelling nature, and the villagers joked that his eyes were fae-touched in how one could supposedly get lost in their strange indigo hue.
Wanting a good life for him, Kurloz's mother enrolled him at Hogwarts, knowing he'd get the best wizarding education from there. She just didn't realize that Rhys Rhydderch was a Potions professor there. Kurloz enjoyed his days at Hogwarts, finally able to talk about his experience with the faeries and their nightly festivals freely with the other students. Eventually he found a close friend in Meulin, absolutely charmed by the hyperactive and romantic girl. They soon began to date in Kurloz's fourth year, though they never did anything beyond a few innocent kisses as Meulin was younger than him.
When he returned home for the holidays at the end of his fourth year, he asked his mother again and again for more information on his father. She finally caved, believing Kurloz to be old and mature enough to understand, and told him that his father was, while a respectable and powerful wizard, just a bit too keen on the Dark Arts for her to reveal her son to. Kurloz was satisfied with this, but he also grew curious about the Dark Arts, wanting to understand why they would hold such allure for his father. He secretly ordered books on the subject, spending quite a large chunk of his holidays on reading them, never game enough to practice said spells but learning everything about them. Concerned with how much time Kurloz was spending holed up in his room, his mother told him to invite a friend for the holidays.
He immediately Owled Meulin and she soon showed up to spend a week with them. Kurloz secretly told her everything he'd learned about his father and the two speculated what sort of man he might be. As young minds are oft to do, their imaginations ran wild and they came up with some rather terrifying personas for the mystery man. One night, Kurloz had an intense nightmare involving their imagined monster father, and he screamed out a curse in self-defense. The dark spell struck Meulin, leaving her deaf and she was promptly taken to hospital.
Horrified with what he'd done - in accident no less - Kurloz bit out his own tongue, which led to a trip to the hospital for him as well. Though the healers were able to recover the tongue, the trauma of the experience left Kurloz mute and depressed. He never explained, but one of the reasons he refused to speak was because a small part of him had enjoyed casting the spell, that it had made him feel powerful... and that terrified him.
He didn't return to Hogwarts for a year due to therapy, picking up sign-language in the process. He grew obsessed with the human body and how frail it was, studying biology on his own avidly and learning all the strengths and weaknesses his species had to offer. His obsession went so far as to lead him into decorating some of his clothes with bones, leaving him looking like a skeleton himself. He grew smarter with his age though, and knew to keep these hidden from his already worried mother, wearing them only when alone at home, often staring for hours at the mirror and naming all the bones in his body, then those painted on his clothes. His sketchbooks were filled with eerily accurate anatomical drawings as well as questionable pieces that portrayed him being slowly swallowed up by monsters. He even went so far as to purchase greasepaint, decorating his face like a skull. After a while he began to wear khol around his eyes daily, the sinister part of his mind insisting that the black lines made the indigo irises stand out, making them more noticeable and captivating and soon he found that if he wanted he could stare into someone's eyes and they wouldn't be able to look away.
With his spirits supposedly lifted despite remaining mute, his psychiatrist suggested to his mother that Kurloz might recover fully if he were returned to his school environment where he could grow used to magic again. Thus, Kurloz returned to Hogwarts to pick up his fifth year at last. Apptivity.
